Slay Cinema: Evil Dead Burn – a lot of blood and a funny old lady
Category: Good
Messages and Meaning
Evil Dead Burn focuses on the typical toxic family that can’t stand each other but is obsessed with the idea of staying together. The film skims the surface of themes like emotional dependence and domestic violence against a backdrop of demons and dismembered bodies. The story doesn’t take itself too seriously and quickly shifts to brutal action, always leaving room for comic relief to keep the audience entertained.
Plot
The plot of Evil Dead Burn is rather rushed, but it gives us the usual isolated house in the wilderness where a family is hunted down by demonic creatures. Sinister supporting characters, the final girl, demons, and an ancient dagger that can destroy evil. A solid execution of the tried-and-true formula. The film stays true to the series with its brutal violence, but without being overwhelming. The occasional humor and absurd situations make it feel more like a bloody rock concert than something genuinely scary.
Characters
Alice – Alice is the typical underdog. She’s trying to find her place in the world, but she’s constantly being pushed around by everyone else. When the moment of truth arrives, she’s the one who manages to stand up to evil.
The Grandmother – Surprisingly funny and likable, the grandmother is definitely the most memorable character in the film and the key to striking a balance between horror and comedy.
Important details
The scene where Alice defeats the final demon not with a chainsaw but with a jackhammer is a charming nod to the previous films.
The grandmother’s interactions with the others are always entertaining and are the highlight of the film.
The kiss between the mother and father is completely unnecessary and is a cheap attempt at shocking perversion.
