River Jude Bottom was born in Madras, Oregon. He grew up in a large family with four younger siblings, including actor Joaquin Phoenix. His family had an unconventional childhood and lived in several countries before eventually settling in the United States.

River began acting at a young age, appearing in television commercials and shows before moving into film. He gained widespread attention for his role as Chris Chambers in the 1986 film Stand by Me. His performance in Running on Empty earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor when he was only 18. Although his acting career was brief, he was recognized for choosing challenging and unconventional roles.

In his personal life, River Phoenix was known as a private and sensitive person. In the final years of his life, he was dating actress Samantha Mathis, who was his co-star in The Thing Called Love. Phoenix was also deeply concerned about environmental and animal-rights issues. He was a committed vegan and supported various environmental, animal-welfare, and humanitarian causes.

River Phoenix died at the age of 23 after collapsing outside the Viper Room nightclub in West Hollywood. His death was caused by acute multiple-drug intoxication and shocked both the entertainment industry and the public.
