What Is the Difference Between Pleasure and Happiness?
The fundamental difference is that pleasure belongs to the ego, while happiness belongs to the true self. Pleasure is the enjoyment of acquiring rewards. Delicious food. A sparkling diamond. Winning a competition. Receiving compliments. Being admired and indulged. The pleasures of the ego are a wonderful part of life, and we should not deny ourselves them.
But we should never mistake them for genuine happiness. Happiness belongs to the true self. It is found in the things that are deep and meaningful. In the things that make us who we are. Happiness is found in achieving our dreams, but also in the ability to dream in the first place. It is found in spending time with the people we love, but also in the ability to love at all. Happiness is life’s highest purpose, yet it also exists in the simple fact that we are alive.
Another key difference is that happiness is a state of being, while pleasure is only a temporary emotion. Pleasure lasts only while the experience continues. Once it is gone, it leaves no lasting foundation.
Happiness, however, is absolute. Even when we feel sad, angry, or discouraged, those emotions do not erase the happy spirit with which we move through life. Pleasure can benefit us, but it can also stand in the way of our happiness.
Whenever we pursue pleasure, we should ask ourselves whether it truly serves our well-being. Happiness is the highest value, and it is always the right path.
