Messages and Meaning
“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” strives to show respect for other cultures. The film endeavors to approach human history with care and to explore the points where facts and legends overlap.
The theme of a second chance is important. Everyone deserves one, but how they choose to use it depends entirely on them.
Another key theme is the temptation of ancient artifacts. This ties the series together, as Lara faces the alluring opportunity to steal the artifact for herself in both films. The theme of the distant past, which is filled with exciting yet dangerous secrets, is skillfully told, and Lara once again chooses to care for humanity over her thirst for power.
Plot
The plot is dynamic, featuring a series of exciting events in a wide variety of locations around the world. We find ourselves underwater, high in the mountains, and in magical African forests. In addition to the usual battle between good and evil on the path to the ultimate goal, there are also subplots that add color to the story. Various villains who are at war with one another, and a love story in which it remains unclear throughout whether the two partners are actually fighting on the same side.
Characters
The characters are just as likable as they were in the first movie.
Lara Croft – Lara continues to prove herself as a great heroine who respects and values people’s differences. She demonstrates the resolve not to reveal what must remain hidden.
Terry Sheridan – Terry is a likable character who, even though he’s on the wrong side, provides a good counterbalance to Lara throughout the film.
Important details
The shark scene will forever be one of the defining moments of 2000s cinema. Not only does Lara manage to defeat a shark by punching it, but the shark also roars like a bear before swimming exactly where Lara wants it to go. Genius.
Lara pulls off a number of amazing stunts. Whether it’s a dramatic toss of her hair, an unnecessarily over-the-top shot fired at the ceiling, or a shepherd’s leap into a moving helicopter, she’s always fantastic.
The final scene, in which Lara opens the flap of Pandora’s box before closing it completely, is a beautiful and important detail that gives the film a sense of closure.
