The Lost World: Jurassic Park – from Isla Sorna to San Diego

Messages and Meaning

The Lost World : Jurassic Park continues the theme of the first film about the relationship between humans and nature, and although it fails to reach the same depth, it manages to explore it fully.

The Lost World : Jurassic Park focuses on people’s different approaches to the living world – those who want to preserve and admire it and those who want to destroy and exploit it. Nature is revealed as wild and dangerous, punishing those who disrespect it. The film also takes us deeper into the social world of dinosaurs, emphasizing their intelligence and the complexity of their behavioral patterns.

Plot

The plot delivers what you’d expect from a sequel – more interactions with dinosaurs, an island without fences for a more dynamic environment, and twice as many T. rexes. Protecting the animals from poachers is taken to a new level, where the roles of predator and prey can change in an instant.

The story takes us on a journey with the dinosaur rescuers, who fight both the greed of humanity and the deadly dangers of the wild. The film manages to give us both the right dose of tension and impressive action scenes, while continuing to develop its world and follow its narrative threads.

Of course, The Lost World : Jurassic Park takes a rather unconventional decision for its finale when it decides to bring the Tyrannosaurus rex into civilization. And although it is strange and unrealistic, the decision is not a complete disaster, due to the choice of a humorous approach, through which we get mostly funny scenes of a dinosaur running through the city, rather than a statement of something serious.

Characters

Unfortunately, the film does not include enough of the characters from the original, but it still manages to offer us some pretty decent individuals.

John Hammond – John remains true to his dream and, although he has lost sight of the risks, his dialogue with Ian is definitely the best in the entire film.

Ian Malcolm – Ian is too peculiar to be the main character, but the decision to have him in a relationship with Sarah and have a daughter breaks him down and gives him enough nuance to handle the task.

Sarah Harding – Brave and adventurous, Sarah is willing to cross any boundaries to be close to nature and learn more about it.

Roland Tembo – Including a hunter in an animal protection film as a positive character is an unusual and clever decision. Roland has a strong presence in the film, and although his views are often controversial, he is the voice of practicality and reason, and by defending his positions in a dignified manner, he manages to win the respect of the viewer.

Important details
  • The storyline with the caravan, from the treatment of the baby Rex to its fall into the abyss, is masterfully crafted down to the smallest detail and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.
  • The scene with Sarah on the cracking glass is an example of supreme skill in building tension in cinema.
  • It’s wonderful that we see the velociraptors approaching the humans in the tall grass from a bird’s eye view, so that we get a complete picture of everyone’s location and can anticipate the impending tragedy.
  • When Sarah and Ian’s daughter dig to escape the raptors, we can see the parallel between their delicate hands and the aggressive claws of the predators, which is also a good reference to the first film
  • The scene with the velociraptor being killed through gymnastics is so absurd that over time it has become a charming symbol of the director’s madness.
  • Sarah’s escape from the stegosaurs is the only scene in the entire series where someone’s life is in danger because of a herbivorous dinosaur.
