Slay Cinema: Catwoman – Charm, Sex Appeal, and Nonsense
Category: Good
Messages and Meaning
Catwoman explores the theme of a free-spirited woman who wants to live by her own rules. Of course, we have to keep in mind that this is only 10% of the movie’s message. The other 90% is about the fact that Halle Berry is a sexy, badass chick, and I have no problem with that.
The movie doesn’t take itself seriously, and the moments when it does are funnier than its intended humor. If you’re in the right mood for a charming, over-the-top movie with absurdly funny action scenes, you’ll definitely enjoy Catwoman.
The movie raises one key question: How cool is it to be a woman who struts across rooftops in high heels with a whip in her hand? And the answer is: very cool.
Plot
The plot is downright crazy – to the point where it actually becomes a plus. The main conflict is between a woman who’s been gassed by a cat and a woman who uses a super-villainous body lotion… Yes, that’s really what it’s about. The story is filled with absurd situations, yet it still has a pleasant feel of a romantic comedy with touches of fantasy and action.
The cinematography is ridiculous, the special effects are terrible, and the dialogue is often a complete disaster. But somehow, each of these elements goes beyond being annoying and becomes wonderful.
Characters
The characters are clichéd, but each one has a positive presence.
Patience Phillips – Patience has an interesting journey of self-discovery. From a nerdy girl seeking revenge, she transforms into a self-assured woman who wants nothing more than to be free.
Laurel Hedare – An unexpected villain whose greatest struggle is to protect the secret of a toxic cream. But the fact that she’s played by Sharon Stone speaks for itself, and the character is compelling, even if not always for the right reasons.
Important details
The scene where Catwoman walks along the edge of the roof and is shown from head to toe is still the best scene for revealing the female body and a costume. This scene is iconic for the 2000s.
Catwoman is wonderful in her over-the-top performance, and every “mrrr” or “meow” is fantastic in the most theatrical way possible.
The film’s music is also exceptionally good and fits the atmosphere perfectly.
