Messages and Meaning

X attempts to explore meaningful themes such as the need for intimacy and the burden of aging, but this proves to be too much for it to handle. In the end, all we’re left with is a mentally ill old woman who kills off young characters we never had time to care about. Instead of the film’s ideas being developed, they simply get lost in a whirlwind of madness, turning the film into yet another mediocre slasher movie.

Plot

The plot of X gets off to a great start. A group of young people, including Jenna Ortega, heads to a remote cabin by a lake to shoot an erotic film in the late ’70s, but they’re attacked by a knife-wielding killer. It’s the perfect recipe for an entertaining horror movie. But the story never quite manages to strike the right balance between its elements. It tries to be funny, it tries to be scary, but it falls short in every aspect and ends up amounting to nothing.

Characters

The characters have potential, but instead of being nuanced versions of themselves, they are simply the usual archetypes, lacking any individual traits.

Important details

The killer is an elderly woman, which creates an interesting dynamic in which she must balance her helplessness with her bloodthirstiness.
