Slay Cinema: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans – going into the mid ages
Category: Very Good
Messages and Meaning
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans makes the exceptionally smart decision to focus another film on its most complex character – Lucian. He is definitely the most interesting character in the first film, and it’s wonderful that the third installment gives us the chance to get to know him better.
Lucian evolves before our eyes from a child into a self-aware individual who decides to take his fate into his own hands and lead a rebellion against the tyrants.
At the same time, we get an up-close look at his love story with Sonya, which transcends social taboos to bring together two beings destined by nature to be enemies.
Another excellent choice in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is transporting us to a medieval atmosphere. As the saying goes, where there are vampires, there are castles. The medieval weapons and setting create a more mythical feel, which suits a film like this perfectly.
Plot
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans tells the classic story of a tyrant and the hero who leads the revolution against him. Of course, the hero is in love with the tyrant’s daughter. Of course, freedom and love clash, and in the end, the one whom both warring sides love becomes a victim of their feud. A story as old as time, but told well.
The plot about lovers who defy the rules never gets old. And in the end, love and the desire for freedom triumph over restrictions.
Characters
Sonya – Sonya is strong and freedom-loving, which quickly shows us why she reminds us of Celine.
Lucian – Lucian proves himself to be a brave warrior, determined to fight for love and freedom to the very end. His character also has its own specific nuances, such as his transformation from a slave into a leader. From a man who slaughtered his own people to the one who will lead them forward.
Victor – Here we see Victor in his most monstrous form. But he is an imposing figure who looks even better in a gloomy castle.
Important details
The sex scene between Sonya and Lucian on the edge of a cliff is legendary. Erotic and unusual, this is exactly what a sex scene between mythical creatures should look like.
When Victor watches Lucian running away from the castle, he waits until he feels the pain of the sunrise before hiding, which is a wonderful moment of malice and power.
Lucian’s supposed murder of Victor is an unrealistic mistake on his part, made simply to look impressive to the audience.
