Short biography:

23 October 1940 – 29 December 2022

Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born in Três Corações, Brazil, in a modest family. As a child he played football barefoot with improvised balls made from socks or newspapers. His remarkable talent allowed him to join Santos FC at the age of 15.

Pelé won the FIFA World Cup three times — in 1958, 1962, and 1970 —, which is an absolute record. At the tournament in 1958 he was just 17 years old and gained fame as a prodigy. In his career, he scored more than 1,000 goals in official and unofficial matches combined. He was also an ambassador of football and had an important role popularizing the sport around the world.

After his retirement, Pelé stayed active as a humanitarian. He worked with the United Nations and UNESCO to promote peace and encourage children’s development through sports. Additionally, he served as Minister of Sports in Brazil.
