Short biography:

14 October 1894 – 03 September 1962

Edward Estlin Cummings, known as e e cummings, was born in Massachusetts, in the family of a Harvard professor. He attended the same university studying literature. During World War I, he volunteered as an ambulance driver in France. For several months, he was detained there on suspicion of espionage.

Cummings broke away from traditional poetry, disregarding the rules of grammar, punctuation, and syntax. His goal was to show emotions in a more natural way, as they emerge in the human mind. The topics of his poems are truly profound, they focus on love, individuality and non-conformity. Cummings always positioned himself against societal norms and mass culture and stood for freedom and self-expression.

Cumming’s personal life was complicated. He married three times and had one daughter, Nancy. However, his relationship with her in her early years was difficult due to legal complications and custody issues. He remained creatively active throughout his whole life.
