Little choices – the fabric our lives are made of

The big choices in life are wonderful. When you make a bold decision and jump into the eye of the storm, you shout out loud to the world who you are. But for each of us, such situations are few and far between. What fills our real lives are the small choices we make every day.

Will I get up half an hour earlier? Will I eat healthily or buy a burger to eat on the go? Will I set aside 20 minutes for exercise? Will I find time for myself and my loved ones? Will I work on my dream? All these moments are the fabric our lives are made of.

Every day you choose who you want to be. Even if you were afraid yesterday, today you can be brave. Even if you have been lazy your whole life, today you can choose to work hard for what you want to achieve. And if you have been generous and loyal every day until now, then today you must also choose to be so.

Choices and values

In order to make good choices, we must first ask ourselves: What is important to me? When we have two or three things to guide us, we know that our small actions and habits must be linked to them. If friendship is important to us, we strive to be good friends every day, even when our busy lives pull us in other directions. If we truly care about nature, we know that we must protect it every day through our actions, not just when it is convenient for us.

Do I feel good about myself?

The next important point is to feel good about ourselves. Imagine a person who claims to be on a diet but indulges in forbidden foods every day. They bring him short-lived pleasure, but just a few minutes later he feels guilt, disappointment, and perhaps even shame. These feelings are repeated day after day and lead to unhappiness with oneself. In the end, the person is likely to simply abandon the diet to escape the negative emotions, but the dream of a healthy body is also abandoned.

Conversely, if we manage to show the discipline to complete all our small tasks for the day, we can go to bed at night with a sense of satisfaction from a productive day. We want that feeling to be repeated, and therefore we will be motivated to have more days like that.

Long-term goals

Last but not least, small but consistent choices lead to big results. Big goals are not achieved with huge efforts made once or twice, but with the determination to devote time to them over months and years. And that is what our choices should be aimed at. For example, if you want to be a successful architect and a good parent, then your efforts should be focused on always delivering quality work, staying informed about new developments in the field, and listening to your children and respecting their feelings, even when you are busy at work.

Sometimes, making compromises in small situations does not seem to have major consequences. But in practice, this is not the case. They reveal our true will and strength of character, even in boring situations. Every choice matters, and let’s make sure that more of them correspond to our best version of ourselves.
