Jurassic Park III – Man and Velociraptor as Equal Opponents

Category: Good

Messages and Meaning

Jurassic Park III deepens the image of the velociraptor in particular. Here, the velociraptors are revealed to us in greater detail about their social life and are presented not only as ruthless, perfect killing machines, but also as intelligent creatures that have built a social structure. They are caring parents and even manage to communicate with humans as equals. The third film is key to the direction this storyline takes, as velociraptors are the basis for the next three films and the deepest motive behind the revival of dinosaurs.

Everything else in Jurassic Park III has already been seen and does not give much food for thought.

Plot

The plot is one of the weaker ones in the series. The decision to bring back only Dr. Grant and put the Kirby family at the center is just as counterproductive as the idea of killing the T. rex right at the beginning. If these two strange decisions are corrected, things will look much better.

Of course, if we bring Alan back, we have to bring Ellie back too. They are the main couple and their story would have developed further. As intelligent people familiar with the situation, Alan and Ellie would have been an excellent contrast to the stupid Kirbys, and the relationship within their couple could have been rekindled. Instead, Ellie’s role is reduced to picking up the phone…

Killing Rexie at the beginning is just stupid. Yes, since the first film gave us one Tyrannosaurus rex and the second two, it is logical that the third should give us an even bigger and scarier dinosaur. But this could have been an entire storyline in which the two titans fight for territory and battle each other many times while our heroes successfully maneuver between them. Instead, it’s a few seconds of screen time and… that’s it.

The only successful storyline is the one with the velociraptors, which has a proper development, climax, and resolution.

Characters

The casting is the biggest weakness of Jurassic Park III.

Alan Grant – Although he is a pleasant presence of reason, Alan has nothing to do in this film and simply stands in the position of a man who is surrounded by annoying fools and does not want to be eaten.

The Kirby family – An extremely annoying couple with no reason to be in this film.

Erik – A likeable, brave kid, but a character we’ve seen before.

Billy – Although lacking in depth, he is one of the few characters with a decent arc.

Important details
  • The scene in which Allen dreams of a talking raptor is probably the most ridiculous and inappropriate scene in the entire series.
  • Although the battle between Spinosaurus and T-Rex is very short and has a controversial outcome, it remains the best clash of the titans scene in the series.
  • The scene with the velociraptor pretending to be stuffed in a glass jar is absurd, to say the least. It has a good surprise effect, but the idea of such intelligence is ridiculous and contradicts the rest.
  • Of course, a phone could never ring and be heard from inside a dinosaur’s stomach, but the motif is introduced with enough humor to be positive.
  • The scene of communication between humans and raptors is well done, and the idea that one mother must return the eggs to another is a clever motif.
